Dr Nicholas Smith is a respected hand and wrist surgeon passionate about providing patients with state of the art treatments for conditions affecting the hand, wrist and upper limb.
Strongly focused on research, Dr Smith is an innovator within his field and regularly presents at national and international conferences. He is respected and acknowledged by peers in Australia and abroad.
His ongoing commitment is to achieve better results through the use of minimally invasive surgical approaches and the use of optimal hand surgery techniques. Dr Smith adopts a collaborative approach with his colleagues and is regularly referred complex cases from other hand surgeons based at clinics in Sydney, the Southern Highlands, Norwest and even interstate. Likewise, where he feels a patient’s problem falls into another specialist’s area of expertise, he will refer to that specialist.
Dr Smith is dedicated to ongoing teaching and research in hand surgery. He is an associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Macquarie University. He is an active member of the Australian Hand Surgery Society and the NSW Hand Surgery Society, of which he is currently president. He is a reviewer for both the American and European Journals of Hand Surgery. He is an active member of the Asia Pacific Wrist Association and of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society.
He has been honoured to act as an instructor at the prestigious European Wrist Arthroscopy Society wrist arthroscopy course in Strasbourg.
He has particular interest in advanced wrist arthroscopic techniques, including arthroscopic bone grafting for scaphoid non-union, arthroscopic management of wrist ligament deficiency, arthroscopic partial wrist fusion and arthroscopic reduction of intra-articular distal radius fractures. However, he enjoys helping patients, young and old, with all kinds of common hand, wrist and nerve problems.
